SUGAR FAQS

WHAT IS SUGARING HAIR REMOVAL?

Sugaring is an all-natural hair removal method that uses a paste made from only three ingredients: sugar, lemon juice, and water. A natural alternative to wax. The paste is applied at body temperature, worked against the direction of hair growth to wrap around each hair shaft, then removed in the direction of natural hair growth — pulling the hair cleanly from the follicle.

The technique has been used for thousands of years across the Middle East and North Africa.

SUGAR VS WAX

The key differences come down to what the product adheres to and the direction of removal.

Ingredients

  • Sugar: Sugar, lemon, water Wax: Resins, chemicals, fragrances

Applied temperature

  • Sugar: Body temp — no burn risk Wax: Hot — burn risk on sensitive skin

Adheres to

  • Sugar: Hair + dead skin cells only Wax: Hair AND live skin cells

Remove

  • Sugar: In direction of hair growth Wax: Against direction of hair growth

Skin irritation

  • Sugar: Minimal Wax: Higher — especially on sensitive skin

Ingrown hair risk

  • Sugar: Lower Wax: Higher

Residue

  • Sugar: Rinses off with water Wax: Sticky — requires oil to remove

Traditional wax adheres to live skin cells and is removed against the grain. That friction against the hair follicle is the main reason waxing causes more ingrown hairs, redness, and post-service irritation — especially for clients with sensitive or reactive skin.

BEFORE CARE

Hair Length: Hair must be at least 1/4 inch long (roughly the size of a grain of rice), Which is typically 2-3 weeks of hair growth. Skip chemical exfoliants for 72 hours and avoid sun exposure/tanning for 24 hours prior.

AFTERCARE

Avoid hot showers, saunas, heavy sweating (intense workouts), and tight clothing. Do not use harsh skincare, retinols, or acids on the area for 48 hours.

Begin gentle exfoliation 3–4 days after your treatment to prevent ingrown hairs.

BENEFITS OF SUGAR OVER WAXING

  • Applied at body temperature — no burning risk

  • Only adheres to hair and dead skin cells, not live tissue

  • Removed in the natural direction of hair growth, reducing breakage

  • Acts as a gentle exfoliant with every treatment

  • Rinses off completely with water — no sticky residue

  • 100% natural — ideal for clean beauty clients

  • Reduces ingrown hairs over time with regular appointments

  • Hair grows back finer and sparser with consistent sugaring

WHO IS SUGARING BEST FOR?

Sugaring is suitable for almost everyone, but it's especially well-suited for:

- Sensitive or reactive skin — clients who find waxing too harsh

- Ingrown hair-prone skin — the direction of removal significantly reduces ingrowns

HOW LONG DOES HAIR NEED TO BE FOR BODY SUGARING?

Hair should be approximately ¼ inch long for the paste to grip effectively — similar to the length required for waxing. I'll check at your appointment and let you know if you need a little more growth before we start. You should be able to grab the hair with your fingers and pull. If its too short to grab, it will be too short to sugar.

DOES SUGARING HURT LESS THAN WAXING?

Most clients report that sugaring is more comfortable than waxing, particularly with regular appointments. Because the paste doesn't adhere to live skin cells and is removed with the grain, there is less traction and less disruption to the follicle.

HOW LONG DOES SUGARING HAIR REMOVAL LAST?

Sugaring results typically last 3–5 weeks depending on your natural hair growth cycle. With consistent appointments, body hair grows back finer and sparser over time.
